WOODLAND PAVILION

WOKING

The Brief:

Tucked beneath a canopy of mature trees, this once-stolid red-brick home in the South East stood as a relic of compartmentalised suburban design. BetterLivingSpace Ltd was invited to re-envision the house as a luminous, contemporary family residence—maximising daylight, framing tree-top vistas, and forging a genuine indoor–outdoor connection—all without extending the footprint or breaching planning constraints.

The Architectural Design & Structural Engineering:

Central to the transformation was a bold new exterior language: a layered composition of charcoal-hued stone, pristine white render and horizontal cedar cladding. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and expansive picture windows replace heavy masonry, flooding the main living areas in northern light. Concealed steel lintels, portal frames and bespoke beams carry new openings back to the original foundations, liberating the interior from its former enclosure.

A striking triangular gable and discreetly cantilevered balcony on the upper level balance modern minimalism with timber warmth, offering a private retreat above the courtyard. Behind this refined envelope, a meticulous 3D BIM model and early probe surveys ensured every new support, drainage run and service void was coordinated off-site—turning complex structural engineering into a harmonious choreography of form and function.

Internally, walls were reconfigured to create an intuitive family plan. A snug and dedicated study flank the main living space, while a playroom sits adjacent to the kitchen for effortless supervision. Tucked quietly to the rear, a utility room and shower room serve the household without compromising flow. Upstairs unfolds as a sanctuary: a master suite complete with dressing area and tree-lined balcony, a guest suite with ensuite, plus three further bedrooms sharing a gracious family bathroom.

The Result:

The completed residence reads as a modern pavilion in harmony with its woodland edge. Interiors glow from dawn until dusk, and the paved courtyard extends living space seamlessly into nature. Durable, low-maintenance finishes and enhanced energy performance ensure that beauty does not demand extra upkeep. This home now embodies the clients’ vision: a bright, family-focused sanctuary where every room feels connected—to light, to landscape and to one another.
